Battlefleet 1900 Scenario: Samar Surprise

Location – Samar Island, Philippines. 1898.

Background – After the loss of their main Pacific fleet at the battle of Manila Bay, the Spanish withdrew their center of operations down to the Visayas – the islands of central Philippines. Unbeknownst to the American commander Dewey, the Spanish protected cruiser Reina Regente had been secretly stationed in the Vasayas two years before under the guise of having been lost at sea. When an American expedition arrives under escort by the protected cruiser Raleigh, they are surprised to discover the Reina Regente guarding the hemp ports off of Samar.

Scenario special rules – Darkness comes after 20 turns. No night fighting allowed. Transports are considered to automatically escape (if desired) after nightfall.

SetupRaleigh begins game on northeast corner of playing area on an easterly heading. Reina Regente begins game on the southeast corner of playing area on a northwesterly heading.
Closest setup proximity: 3 Nautical Miles


Reinforcement Die Rolls (1D6)
American Transports: A medium sized freighter and two packet steamers. Roll once at the start of turn 8 and each turn thereafter. On any die roll of 6 or greater the transports arrive on northwest corner of the playing area during the movement phase. If the Raleigh has already been sunk, they are considered captured.


Victory Conditions
Major American Victory: Reina Regente sunk or immobilized, all US transports pass through southeastern corner of playing area and on to Samar.
Moderate American Victory: Riena Regente not sunk but all US transports pass through southeastern corner of playing area and on to Samar.
Minor American Victory: At least 24 size points of US transports pass through southeastern corner of playing area and on to Samar.
Impasse: Less than 24 size points of US transports pass through southeastern corner of playing area and on to Samar.
Minor Spanish Victory: US transports turned away with no sinkings on either side.
Moderate Spanish Victory: Raleigh badly damaged, US tranports turned away with at least one sunk.
Major Spanish Victory: Raleigh sunk, all US transports captured or sunk.
